A closer look at the actual interface, with creative decisions kept in the producer’s hands.

Neutron’s Unmask module is designed to create separation between competing tracks. iZotope specifically identifies kick-and-bass balance and vocal clarity as examples of its intended use. izotope ↗
That makes low-end competition a useful place to evaluate what the tool contributes.
Define the Relationship First
Before processing, decide what each part should do. Is the kick supposed to deliver a short punch while the bass sustains underneath? Or is the bass the main rhythmic hook?
Then make a controlled comparison:
- Listen to the two parts together.
- Apply the unmasking process.
- Adjust the amount.
- Return to the full arrangement.
- Check whether the relationship improved without losing the intended weight.
The goal is not maximum separation at any cost. Some records need the kick and bass to feel closely connected.
Use intelligent processing to test a solution—not to avoid making the underlying arrangement decision. If both parts demand the same space at the same moment, changing a note, sound, or rhythm may be the more musical experiment.
